Dentistry

We love dentistry at Leith Vets & perform our dental procedures to the highest standards with state of the art equipment. All of our staff have understand the importance of caring for our pet’s teeth and Nichola has a special interest in dentistry. We perform a maximum of two dental procedures per day to ensure we have adequate time allocated to each patient.

Cats and dogs can’t tell us if they have oral discomfort and many pets won’t let us look in their mouths. Often they will continue to eat even with severe periodontal disease. A free dental consultation with one of our nurses is a great way to have a look what is going on in your pet’s mouth.

Can you imagine what our teeth would be like if we didn’t brush them every day? Daily brushing is the best thing you can do for your pet’s teeth. However, just like us and despite our best efforts, dogs can cats still often require scale and polishes of their teeth. If you’ve ever had a scale and polish, you will know it can be sensitive for the teeth and gums. Cats and dogs don’t tolerate conscious cleaning below the gum line and don’t lie still for teeth extractions so this is why a general anaesthetic is required to do a thorough job.

We can’t tell what is happening below the gum line so this is where dental x-rays are really important. It’s just like when we go to the dentist and the dentist performs x-rays. We don’t want to take out healthy teeth either so dental x-rays help to inform us if a tooth needs to be extracted. Where appropriate, we also use local anaesthetic nerve blocks to provide additional pain relief.

All of our patients receive intravenous fluids to help maintain their blood pressure, to protect the kidneys and to ensure adequate hydration. We feel this is important because dental procedures with extractions done properly can take approximately 2 hours.

Adult Dogs & Cats

Cat scale & polish with dental x-rays, IV fluids & medications £320

We have fixed price dental packages for pets requiring extractions. The packages include dental X-rays, IV fluids, extractions, local anaesthetic nerve blocks, pain relief and antibiotics where required.

We offer free nurse consultations for registered and not yet registered clients all year round where you can be provided with an accurate dental procedure estimate for your pet.

We are happy to help out by doing direct insurance claims with most insurance companies with a pre-authorisation which confirms dental procedures will be covered.
