Extra Mural Studies (EMS) & Work Experience at Leith Vets
We love welcoming students to Leith Vets! Our whole team is passionate about supporting the next generation of vets and veterinary nurses, and we’re committed to making every placement a positive, rewarding and valuable learning experience. At our practice, we believe in providing high-quality hands-on learning opportunities that match with your current level of learning.
Our EMS placements are very popular so we recommend contacting us well in advance to secure dates. We’re currently fully booked for EMS placements in 2026 and for the month of April 2027. We are now taking bookings for summer 2027.
EMS
To apply for an EMS placement at Leith Vets, please email us your CV along with a covering letter outlining any particular areas of interest and what you hope to gain from your time with us. Please include any other EMS placements you have completed in your application.
We are currently able to offer an initial one-week EMS placement. Any requests for additional weeks will be considered at our discretion. Currently we are also only able to support one student at a time.
Please note that we are unable to offer EMS placements over the Christmas and New Year period.
Once your placement dates have been confirmed, we’ll send you some further information to help us tailor your experience. This will include a few questions about the specific skills you’d like to develop and the areas of veterinary practice you’d like to learn more about.
Unfortunately we are only able to offer EMS to students studying veterinary science in the UK. We do not offer internships.

Work Experience
Just like EMS, we require all work experience students to email us a CV and covering letter explaining why you are interested in entering the veterinary profession and which courses you are interested in applying for. Please include any other work experience you have already included in your CV. We are unable to accept any applications which have been written by parents.
We receive a high number of requests for work experience at Leith Vets. To help us accommodate as many students as possible, we are currently offering an initial one-day placement, with any additional days offered at our discretion. Work experience is available only to students aged 16 and over who attend schools in our local area. We are only able to support one student at time.
Once we have reviewed your application, we may invite you to the practice for an informal interview. This will give us the opportunity to show you around, learn a little more about you and make sure that the placement will be a good fit for both you and our team. If we are able to offer you a placement, we will send you an information pack containing important details about your visit, including health and safety guidance. Students under the age of 18 will need to have the relevant paperwork signed by a parent or guardian.
